Midvale Man Get Additional 2 Years In Fraud Case: KSUB News Summary
A 60-year-old Midvale man will spend more than two years additional time in prison after he was sentenced in federal court yesterday. The U.S. Department of Justice says this was the second sentencing this year for Chad Leon Sayers. He was convicted after he admitted defrauding hundreds of investors out of ten million dollars in his smartphone company. In 2021, Sayers was charged in a securities fraud scheme involving his company, American Smartphone Inc., doing business as Saygus. Officials say that 15 months of his newest 29-month sentence must be served consecutively with his previous sentence of 41 months in prison. The new sentencing also includes 12 months of supervised release and more than ten million dollars that must be paid in restitution.
Newborn, Two Others Killed In Grand County Collision
A newborn baby girl is one of three people who died in a head-on collision in Grand County. State troopers say the collision happened just after 12:15 p.m. on Sunday at U.S. Route 191. A Chevrolet Suburban was reportedly traveling southbound near mile marker 151 when it entered oncoming traffic at a high rate of speed and collided with a motorhome pulling a GMC Canyon. Police say the driver of the Suburban and two passengers, identified as 31-year-old Derik Hurst and 28-year-old Shandi Hurst and a one-month-old baby girl died at the scene. The family was from Mancos, Colorado. Two additional passengers in the Suburban and two occupants of the motorhome were transported to local hospitals for treatment. Troopers are investigating impairment as a contributing factor in the collision.
Box Elder County's Tangent Fire Difficult To Reach
Some firefighters will be taken by helicopter to the site of an ongoing wildfire in Box Elder County. Officials say the Tangent Peak Fire was discovered yesterday. The fire was sparked by a lightning strike, growing from 20 acres to 300 acres in less than 24 hours. The fire is located west of the Great Salt Lake in the Hogsup Mountain Range. Utah Fire officials say there are no access roads to facilitate getting hand crews in place to battle the blaze. Firefighters are also using five engines, two water tenders, two dozers as well as a helitack crew.
Three In Custody For Car Theft Ring Activity At Salt Lake City International Airport
Three men are in custody in connection with what police say was a coordinated stolen car operation underway at the Salt Lake City International Airport. Investigators on July 12th say witnesses saw the men looking into vehicles in the airport's parking lot. Officers attempted a traffic stop with the men who took off in their vehicle. When the suspects abandoned the car, they were chased down on foot and placed under arrest. A search of the suspects revealed they had blank key fobs and other tools consistent with car thefts. The three men are Jose Alejandro Pavon-Estopian, Yoel Hernandez Fromata and Vainer Pinollotoro. Each is facing charges that include possession of a stolen vehicle, possession of burglary tools, fleeing in a vehicle and failing to stop at the command of police.
