Burgess Offers Legislation To Rename Santaquin Post Office For Slain Officer

Utah Representative Burgess Owens says he's introduced legislation in Washington that paves the way to rename the U.S. Post Office in Santaquin after a slain police officer. Owens, who represents District Four, says he advanced the legislative request yesterday. If the bill is passed, the post office would be named to honor Santaquin Police Sergeant Bill Dean Hooser who was killed on May 5th. Owens says the renaming would be a fitting tribute to the 50-year-old officer who died in the line of duty last May.

Sandy Firefighters Shield Themselves From Live Ammunition

Firefighters in Sandy say their response today to a detached garage fire was complicated by the gunpowder and ammunition that was stored inside. Sandy fire officials say the ammunition was going off in the garage located behind a home at the corner of the property. Firefighters determined it was unsafe to enter the structure and risk being hit by a bullet. No injuries were reported. The garage is considered a total loss with approximately 300-thousand dollars in damage. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Salt Lake Officials Considers Lease Agreement With USA Climbing

Salt Lake City officials will soon vote on offering a 99-year lease agreement to USA Climbing. Company officials say they are planning to construct a new headquarters in the Rio Grande District. The Redevelopment Agency of Salt Lake City discussed its options for the proposed ground lease on Tuesday. The agency is expected to resume discussions in July where a vote may be taken on the specifics of a lease agreement. If approved, the next step would be to begin the "exclusive negotiation agreement" discussion between the Redevelopment Agency and USA Climbing as each works to agree to a final lease deal that locks in Salt Lake City as a world-class climbing destination.
