On Monday, February 27th at about12:20 p.m., a juvenile male suspect arrived at the Canyon View High School parking lot in Cedar City, pulled a gun, and pointed it at four students. No students were harmed, and the juvenile male suspect left the area. The assigned School Resource Officer worked with school staff and students to immediately address the issue. Nearly one hour later on the same day at approximately 1:30 p.m., the suspect returned to the parking lot and physically assaulted a different student. It was learned, the suspect once attended Canyon View High School but is no longer a registered student in the Iron County School District.

Due to the gravity of the threats and the involvement of a firearm, a search warrant was immediately obtained, and a unified plan was put in place to locate and arrest the suspect. It was learned the suspect resided in the 100 East block of DL Sargent Drive in Cedar City. Due to the proximity of his residence to surrounding schools, Canyon View High School and Fiddler’s Elementary School were placed on a temporary lockdown on Tuesday February 28th, as officers attempted to locate and arrest the suspect.

Around 1:00 p.m. this afternoon, the suspect was arrested at his home, and evidence of the crimes were located at his residence. The school lockdowns were quickly lifted. The arrest was a coordinated effort by the Cedar City Police Department, Iron County Sheriff’s Office, Utah Highway Patrol, and the Iron Metro SWAT Team. The suspect has been booked into juvenile detention with multiple charges. Due to the suspect being a juvenile, his name will not be released.
