Crews Scramble To Repair Roads In Zion National Park

Staff at Zion National Park are responding to rockfall on the Zion Canyon Scenic Drive along with road damage on the Kolob Canyons Road.

These are the most recent events that have caused road damage within the park this winter:

These events are of a smaller scale than some of the incidents that happened earlier this winter. On the Zion Canyon Scenic Drive a single lane is still open around the work area, and the Zion Canyon Shuttle system is still in operation. As the work may require, the road is subject to temporary closures. Engineers and maintenance staff are currently assessing the best methods for repair of the road, along with repairing a damaged sewer cover and the vertical pipe that connects it so the sewer line. In addition, they are completing work with the utility company to repair the damaged buried electrical lines. Electrical service to the Zion Lodge was interrupted on Tuesday, March 21^st and was restored the following day.

The Kolob Canyon Road remains closed to all use as it has been since March 15^th. This applies to drivers, biker and hikers. Engineer continue to monitor the situation and are assessing the best options to reopen that road.

Maintenance crews at Zion National Park are responsible to maintain nearly 90 miles of paved and unpaved roads along with more than 90 miles of trails, more than 110 buildings, 10 water supply systems, nine wastewater management systems along with campsites within the park. Their dedicated work enables millions of visitors to partake of the beauty of the Zion National Park experience.
