Let me just warn you that this information about scorpions is important to know and disturbing at the same time. After reading this, you may find yourself running around your house sniffing things and shining a black light into the corners.

We have scorpions here in Southern Utah and as the months get colder, these little buggers are looking for a warm crack or crevice to hunker down in. Your heated home in a crawl space, or basement, even the attic can be a warm dark place for them.

That is disturbing, but this is even more so. According to this Pest Control site, scorpions can smell a little like rotten eggs. Wait, what was that?

You can sometimes tell if you have scorpions by the smell — they emit a distinctive sulphuric odor that mimics rotten eggs.

They also eat many insects that can leave a musty odor. I think this may be even more disturbing. Picture yourself trying to figure out where that musty rotten egg smell is coming from and poking around in the dark places of your house.

If you do go looking, take a black light flashlight with you when you look into the dark.

Scorpions tend to be loners, which can make it more challenging to find them in your home. The best time to spot them is at night when they’re hunting for food. Because scorpions have a glowing exoskeleton, you can often detect them with a black light or an ultraviolet LED flashlight.

Before you freak out and move the kids to grandma’s because you caught a whiff of something rotten, scorpions usually won't infest a living space. They want to avoid humans and they can find plenty of cracks crevices outside in your rocks and brick walls, and even better, in the desert far away from you.
