The Utah Division of Forestry, Fire and State Lands has executed a first time ever contract for the use of Type 1 helicopters to help in the suppresion of fire activity in Utah. The contract is with Croman Corporation. Type 1 helicopters are regaarded as the largest and fastest avaialbe to help with fire suppresion. The SH-3H helicopters are able to deliver large amounts of water or retardant to assist crews on the ground, or other aircraft fighting a wildfire. Mike Melton, aviation officer for the division said, “this is a greatly needed addition to our firefighting toolbox here in Utah. These helicopters will improve our initial attack and large fire support capabilities.” The contract will be for five years, and will have the aircraft available to the state for a 90 day period from June 1st through the end of September. This year, the first aircraft became available on June 15th. The first helicopter will be stationed in Cedar City. The base for the second aircraft has yet to be announced.
